High Spirited & Free
Introduction:
Santas! Today we reflect on the story of everything—not just the events of our lives, but the spirits that move through us, the choices we make, and the freedom we claim. In this story, we encounter Zelda Sayre, described as “no saint,” yet her life pulses with vitality, curiosity, and freedom.
We might ask: what does it mean to be “high-spirited”? It is to live fully, to embrace joy, creativity, and the boldness of self-expression. It is to honor life in a way that refuses to be small or restrained. Zelda embodies this spirit—and in her, we see the same spark that led Nellie, our Church founder, to create the Union of Saints: a courage to live freely, authentically, and with love for all walks of life.
Being high-spirited is not about recklessness; it’s about authenticity. Though when we are young, the two may be confused! It’s about courage in the face of expectation, curiosity in the midst of convention, and joy that radiates outward.
Reflection:Are we honoring our own high spirits? Are we living fully, even when the world whispers, “That’s not proper”?
Even the most free-spirited souls are shaped by roots. Parents, guardians, ancestors—those who first tended our hearts—deserve our gratitude.
Reflection:Take a moment to feel gratitude for those who nurtured you. Their love and guidance enabled your spirit to flourish, even if you ultimately blaze your own trail.
Here, we see a beautiful union. Zelda’s freedom of spirit and vision, and Nellie’s freedom of spirit and vision converge.
Reflection: Our call as Saints is to honor freedom—not as chaos, but as an expression of love, respect, and community. Just as Zelda claimed her life, and Nellie claimed her spiritual vision, we are called to claim our own lives and spirits in harmony with others.
Every life is a story. Some are quiet, some are loud. Some follow maps, others draw their own. Zelda and Nellie remind us that our spirits are unbound, yet our freedom thrives best in gratitude, respect, and communion.
As we move forward, let us carry Zelda’s courage, Nellie’s vision, and the sacred dance of the Union of Saints in our hearts.
May your spirit be bold, Your gratitude abundant, And your freedom always sacred.
